Just For Laughs

Just For Laughs

We were born to make you laugh. From our humble beginnings in 1983 at the Saint-Denis Theatre in Montreal to laughing our way to become the largest global player in the humour industry, we’ve made funny our business. Each year we make millions of people laugh with festivals at home, in Montreal and abroad. We’re home to some serious talent. We’ve hosted comedy’s greatest and watched up-and-comers skyrocket right before our laugh-so-hard-we’re crying eyes. We’ve staged our own comedy, musical and touring shows. We’ve broadcasted digital and television content. We know how to throw a party. And we’re not even close to leaving the spotlight.

Chris Gethard’s Beautiful/CONonymous

Chris Gethard’s Beautiful/CONonymous

Beautiful/Anonymous is a podcast hosted Chris Gethard. He receives calls from random humans. He tweets out a phone number. One person gets through. They never  say their name. He isn’t allowed to hang up for an hour. That’s it.

Beautiful/Anonymous first began in 2016 and has amassed a large, dedicated, and interactive fan base over. The podcast was featured on This American Life and was recently named one of the best podcasts of the decade by Paste Magazine.

We could think of no better, more logical event surrounding an intimate, one-on-one, anonymous podcast than with a FOUR DAY CONVENTION, aptly titled Beautiful/CONonymous.

Fans are invited to descend upon Brooklyn, New York this May so they can congregate amongst one another, enjoy live tapings of the podcast, meet previously ANONYMOUS callers in the flesh, watch some of the best comedians in the world ply their trade, enjoy live music from past callers and friends of the podcast, and party amongst other introverted fans of intimate audio.

Jenny Zigrino Comedy Special Taping

Jenny Zigrino Comedy Special Taping

Presented by New York Comedy Festival

November 2021

Jenny Zigrino (Comedy Central, Conan, MTV, Bad Santa 2) is a comedian, actress, writer, and aging millennial. Her brand of knife sharp wit, unabashed silliness on serious topics, and ability to make you question everything can be seen at her new hour taping on November 14th at Littlefield in Brooklyn as part of the New York Comedy Festival. Her new hour entitled “Jen Z” looks at life from the perspective of a woman in her 30’s falling short of expectations as she watches Gen Z thrive and the boomers refuse to die. Single, unmarried, and now with a roommate, Jenny is coming to grips with being in a generation that never had a chance to live up to their potential. With her own sister a Gen Z’er and her parents boomers, Jenny takes a few cues from the coming generation on how to stand up for yourself, self care, and using witchcraft for everything. As she sprinkles in advice for the younger generation, she comes to the realization that, like her boomer parents, she might not be cool.

Jenny Zigrino has been featured on Comedy Central’s Stand up Half Hour, MTV Girl Code, TruTV Adam Ruins Everything, and many other networks. She has been featured in films including Bad Santa 2 and the 2021release Too Late, starring Ron Lynch and Fred Armisen. She was featured in Just For Laughs New Faces of 2016 and was a regular on the Conan O’Brien show. She performed in festivals all over the world including Telluride Blues Festival, Just for Laughs Montreal, Fly Over Comedy Festival, and this will be her 2nd time at the New York Comedy Festival.

Talent Booker

The world is a dumpster fire. Work wives, best friends, and TV writers/producers Amy Aniobi and Grace Edwards want to help. In response to the madness in the news, they share the culture that lights them up and activities that bring them joy, plus strategies they use to cope with these wild times.

They also invite inspiring special guests to share their own self-care strategies. And since Grace and Amy are comedy writers, they bring a level of casual, edgy fun to it all. During these trying times we all need a show that focuses on joy. This is The Antidote.

Shouting at the Screen

Shouting at the Screen

2013 — 2018

Back in the days before live-tweeting, the only way to express your thoughts while watching a movie was to yell them out loud to the delight of your friends, and the disgust of the old people two rows in front of you. Wyatt Cenac and Donwill invite you to join them as they recreate the magic of Magic Johnson theaters and guide you through the wonderful world of blaxploitaton and black cult cinema. Every month, Wyatt and Donwill head to the Alamo Drafthouse to screen a fine film specimen from yesteryear, egging you on from the peanut gallery as the non-‐foam Statler and Waldorf. Each screening starts with a presentation of obscure trivia and the fun continues with drinking games throughout the film.

Guest Shouters: Jason Sudeikis, Questlove, Jean Grae, Janelle James, Jo Firestone, Alzo Slade, Sasheer Zamata, Roy Wood Jr., and more.

The People’s Bailout: A Variety Show and Telethon to Benefit the 99%

2013

Join Strike Debt for an updated version of an old classic, the telethon, to launch The Rolling Jubilee, a campaign that buys debt for pennies on the dollar and does away with it. Instead of collecting the debt, we will abolish it and help free the debtors! People shouldn’t have to go into debt for an education, because they need medical care, or to put food on the table during hard times. We shouldn’t have to pay endless interest to the 1% for basic necessities. Big banks and corporations walk away from their debts and leave taxpayers to pick up the tab. It’s time for a bailout of the people, by the people. It will be a wild night of music, comedy, magic, education, and the unexpected. This fast-moving variety show will mix well-known performers, intellectuals and activists from Strike Debt and Occupy Wall Street.

Featuring Lizz Winstead, Hari Kondabolu, Guy Picciotto (Fugazi), Jeff Mangum (Neutral Milk Hotel), Tunde Adebimpe and Kyp Malone (TV on the Radio), Das Racist, Janeane Garofalo, and more!

Buggin’ Out! A Cicada Farewell Party

Buggin’ Out! A Cicada Farewell Party

2013

People in New York are notoriously flaky about making plans. None more so than the cicadas—those chirpy flying roach-type things that replied to our city’s collective Facebook invite 17 years ago, promising to burst out of the ground this spring like a crunchy blanket of terror. We expected a buggy apocalypse; we got little more than a few flaccid news headlines. Well, some of us already bought our cicada costumes, so we’re throwing the pests a party anyway. Join us for a farewell bash that will be one part scientific presentations about the insects that stood us up, and one part cicada-inspired comedy by New York’s funniest performers. Plus, stick around after the show for a free screening of 1954′s classic sci-fi film, THEM! An evening of bug-inspired facts, fiction, and comedy.

OUR SWARM OF PRESENTERS / PERFORMERS:
• Louis N. Sorkin, Board Certified Entomologist (American Museum of Natural History)
• “Cicada Tracker” findings presented by the Producers of Radiolab
• The Found Footage Festival
• Cocoon Central Dance Team (UCB, IFC’s “Get it Out There”)
• Ted Travelstead (Sex: Our Bodies, Our Junk, @trumpetcake)
• Lisa Delarios (The Party Machine, Slow Dance)
• Jon Friedman (The Rejection Show)
• Michael Kupperman (Tales Designed to Thrizzle)
• Emily Flake (New Yorker Cartoonist)
